How to Play the Dan Moi Jaw Harp

To play the Dan Moi, start by holding the instrument's frame gently between your thumb and index finger, with the reed (the flexible metal tongue) facing outward. Place the flat end of the frame against your lips, keeping them slightly parted without clamping down on the harp. The instrument should rest lightly on your lips rather than your teeth.

To produce sound, use your free hand to flick the reed inwards or outwards, causing it to vibrate. As you do this, change the shape of your mouth and adjust your breathing to modulate the sound. Different mouth shapes and breath patterns will create various tones and resonances. Experiment with different tongue positions and subtle jaw movements to add rhythm or melody to the sound.
