Guidance and Warnings

Jew's Harp Care Instructions

After playing, always wipe your Jew's Harp with a cloth or tissue to prevent metal corrosion and residue buildup, which can affect sound quality. For instruments prone to corrosion (like blank steel), apply a thin layer of Vaseline or Ballistol oil.

Ballistol is a natural vegetable oil originally used in precision mechanics, also known for its skin-friendly properties. Its unique qualities make it ideal for Jew's Harp maintenance.

How to Play the Dan Moi Jaw Harp

To play the Dan Moi, start by holding the instrument's frame gently between your thumb and index finger, with the reed (the flexible metal tongue) facing outward. Place the flat end of the frame against your lips, keeping them slightly parted without clamping down on the harp. The instrument should rest lightly on your lips rather than your teeth.

To produce sound, use your free hand to flick the reed inwards or outwards, causing it to vibrate. As you do this, change the shape of your mouth and adjust your breathing to modulate the sound. Different mouth shapes and breath patterns will create various tones and resonances. Experiment with different tongue positions and subtle jaw movements to add rhythm or melody to the sound.

With practice, you can master techniques like overtones, rhythmic patterns, and even imitating natural sounds, such as birdsong. The Dan Moi’s free tuning makes it accessible for beginners while offering depth for experienced players to explore.

Warnings

When using the Dan Moi Jaw Harp, exercise caution, especially if you are new to the instrument. The reed can pinch the lip if not handled properly. Start with gentle movements and ensure the harp is positioned lightly against your lips to avoid discomfort.

The Dan Moi Jaw Harp is recommended for children aged 8 and older. Adult supervision is advised to ensure safe use, as the instrument requires careful handling to avoid accidental impact on the teeth or mouth. This product contains small parts and is not suitable for children under 3 years old.
